Introduction: can’t sleep?
Nowadays, diseases like insomnia are often seen in youth, which later on takes the form of serious diseases like depression.
You might have often seen or heard from your school friends or college friends or workmates that they are unable to sleep. No matter how hard he tries, he cannot sleep.
Why can't you sleep? Before asking this question, it is important to know what is sleep? And how do you get sleep?Acharya Charak ji has described it very simply in Ayurveda.
Sleep :
The name of the mental attitude that takes shelter due to lack is sleep. The name of the attitude of abandoning the process of assimilation of all objects by the mind is sleep. At this time only the inner mind remains awake.
Origin of Sleep:
When a person remains awake, the senses remain connected with the mind and the mind remains connected with the soul, the mind perceives the objects of the senses with the help of the senses, when the senses get tired after doing too much work, then their connection with the mind is broken. And the mind also gets tired due to which the person falls asleep.
The heart is said to be the seat of consciousness in the body of living beings. When this heart becomes overwhelmed with Tama, then living beings fall asleep.
Types of Seep According to Ayurveda :
Acharya Charak ji has described 7 types of sleep.
1.Tamobhava – SleeparisingfromTamoGuna
2. shleshma samudabhaav - Sleepiness caused by increase in shleshma.
3. man shramasambhava :Hard work possible
4.shareershramasambhava – Sleeparisingduetobodyfatigue.
5. Aagantukee - Sleep that comes due to laziness, lack of work or intoxication etc. 6.vyaadhyanuvartinee – Sleepthatcomesduetodisease.
7. Raatri svabhaavaprabhaav- Tamoguna increases by nature at night.
Benefits of sleep:
Just as a properly taken diet gives happiness to nourish the body, in the same way sleep also gives an experience of happiness.
Fatness and weakness of the body are caused by sleep and diet.
If sleep is consumed properly then it is the cause of happiness, affirmation, strength, potency, knowledge and life.
Disadvantages of preventing sleep:
1. Yawning
2. Pain in limbs
3. Tadra
4. Chirodisease
5. Heaviness in the eyes
Insomnia:
If any person does not get any kind of sleep during the day or night, then it should be understood that his sleep has been destroyed.
Reason for loss of sleep:
There are following reasons for loss of sleep -
1. Due to increase or disorder of Vata
2. Increase or disorder of bile
3. Mental distress like anxiety, anger, sadness, hysteria 4. From decay
5. Due to injury
Insomnia samprapti :
During sleep, the avalambak kapha present in the heart gets destroyed and along with it, Vata gets aggravated, due to which the mobile quality of Vata makes the mind restless and it remains in touch with the senses.
Since Raja guna is regulated by Vata and Tama guna is regulated by Raja guna, hence Tama also gets distorted and man does not get sleep.
Symptoms of Insomnia:
1. Bodyache
2. Yawning
3. Depression
4. Giddiness
5. Indigestions
6. Drowsiness
7. Vaataja rog
Managment of Insomnia :
In the management of insomnia,
- Patient should consume milk, alcohol, meat juice and curd.
- Patient should perform Abhyanga, Udvartana, bath, head, ears and eyes.
- yoga practice
- parnayama
- Meditation
